草間の日 2018

今年はずいぶん台風が多かったなあと思いながら書きました。
野分、お誕生日おめでとう！
　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　2018.9.30

たしかに、誘ったのは俺だったが
「弘樹、もういいかげん帰れ」
「もうちょっといいだろ」
偶然手にした稀少本を読ませてやろうと呼び出した幼馴染は予想通りに喜んだ。しかし
「お前、一日中ここにいるつもりじゃないだろうな」
「悪ぃかよ」
本を読み終えたのに帰ろうとせず別の本を手にしては読み耽り、リビングのソファーに沈みこんだまま動こうとしない。
完全に予想外だ。
マンションの窓から見える空は今にも降り出してきそうな重たげな雲に覆われている。
「早く帰らないと来るぞ」
「何がだよ」
「台風」
ぺたりと窓ガラスに枯葉が貼りつく。こんな高層階にまで飛んでくるとは、風もかなり強くなってきているようだ。
「今日は来ねーよ」
やけに尖った声に振り返る。
「いや、どう考えても来るだろう」
「来ねぇっつたら来ねーんだよ！アイツはいつもそうだ」
「…アイツ？」
何やら思わぬ方向に話が進み始めた。今日は飲ませていないのに、弘樹の口調はからみ酒の様相を見せ始めている。
「今日くらい…」
何かを言いかけて口ごもったその顔はひどく寂しそうだ。9月にしては肌寒い外の風が入りこんだような気持ちを消すように俺は煙草を咥えた。
今日はいったい何の日だったか。
カレンダーを見ても9月最後の日だということ以外特別な日ではない。それでも、コイツがこんな顔をする原因といったらたった１つだろう。
「草間くん、か」
「うるせーよ」
赤くなった顔を隠すように横を向いた弘樹に、そんなに分かりやすくて大学での仕事は大丈夫なのかと改めて心配になる。
そういえば彼の名前は野分だった。台風という名前の通り、俺にしたらやや乱暴とも言えるやり方で素直じゃない弘樹を幸せにしていることはよくわかっている。しかし、弘樹が寂しそうな顔をしている理由もまた彼が原因なのだろう。
「弘樹。お前、彼とつきあって何年になるんだ？」
「何年って、俺が大学4年の時からだから」
「お前にしてはずいぶんと長いな」
「おい、人聞きの悪い言い方すんな」
「本当のことだろう」
中学生の頃からそれなりに言い寄られていたが、誰とつきあっても長くは続かなかったのを俺が知らないとでも思ってるんだろうか。
「こう見えても俺は…」
「俺は？」
睨みつけるような弘樹の視線を受け止めつつ、続きを待っているとインターホンが鳴った。

インターホンを手にする秋彦の背中を目で追う。
野分と出会うまでの俺は、たしかに適当なつきあい方ばかりしていたけれど、そもそも俺がそんな事をしていた原因は秋彦への想いを長い間拗らせていたせいだ。
それこそ、何年も。
だけど、今は違う。
秋彦に対して片想いをしていた時間と同じくらい、野分のことを想っているし、そして、野分にも想われている、はずだ。
そして、これから先は野分を想う時間が長くなっていくだろう。
問題は、それくらい長い時間つきあっているのに一緒に過ごす時間が少ないということで。
せめて誕生日くらいは一緒に過ごしたいって思うのは何年たっても変わらない。そして、誕生日さえも一緒に過ごせないのも、変わらなかったりする。
ため息をついた俺の前に秋彦が戻ってきた。
「弘樹、帰る支度をしろ」
「…同居人が帰ってきたのか？」
それならしかたない。と立ち上がる。いくら腐れ縁の幼馴染とはいえ、恋人との時間を邪魔する訳にはいかない。
「来たのは美咲じゃない。台風の方だ」
「台風？」
列島直撃だと朝からニュースになってはいたが、いよいよ来たんだろうか。
「ンだよ。台風の中を帰れってか」
「その通りだ」
「冷たいヤツだな」
半ば追い立てられるように玄関に向かい、靴を履いてドアを開けた俺は驚いて立ち止まった。
「ヒロさん！」
「野分？」
今日は仕事で帰って来ないハズの野分が目の前にいた。
「お前…なんで……ここに」
「誕生日だからって早く上げてもらっちゃいました」
「そっか」
「ヒロさんこそ、何で宇佐見さんのところにいるんですか」
「それは…」
何と言ったらいいのか悩む俺の背後から声がした。
「草間くんがいなくて寂しかったらしい」
「秋彦！！」
「そうなんですか？」
「違う！俺はただ本を借りに」
前に野分、後ろに秋彦、という逃げ場のない状況の中、ただアワアワと焦る俺の手を野分がギュッと握りしめた。
「早く帰りましょう」
「早く連れて帰ってくれ」
野分と秋彦の声が重なる。
「はい。お邪魔しました」
俺の代わりに頭を下げた野分の頭をぱしりと叩いて歩き出す。
「待ってください！」
「遅ぇんだよ。早く帰んねーと台風来るぞ」
「はい」
強くなり始めた風が街の中を吹き抜けていく。俺は俺だけの台風の到来に躍る心にあおられながら家路へついた。
