「戻りました」
「お疲れ」
いつもより長くなった昼食を終えて戻った弘樹を椅子に乗った宮城が出迎えた。
「食った気がしなかっただろ」
「美味しかったですよ」
学部長お気に入りの店というだけあって、出された料理は美味かったし、落ち着いた雰囲気も悪くなかった。
「で、何の話だった?」
高槻学部長が自分を昼食に誘ってきた理由を宮城教授は朝から気にしていた。
それは上司として気にかけてくれているのもあるだろうが、宮城が今つきあっている相手が学部長の息子というのも関係しているかもしれない。
(よく考えたらこの人も大変だな)
いつも飄々としているように見えて、意外と悩みは深いのかもしれない、と改めてくるくると子どものように椅子を回している宮城を見下ろす。
「上條?」
「あー、特に何も」
「何も?」
「はい」
「ほんとに?」
「本当ですよ。何歳になったか、とか父はどんな仕事をしているのか、みたいな世間話はしましたけど」
「やっぱりなー。気をつけろよ上條」
「何にですか」
「来るぞ来るぞー」
「だから何がですか」
「何って、見合い話」
「……は?」
「ほら後藤先生も先月結婚したし、文学部内で独身なのはお前だけだろ」
そう言われてみればそうだが、そもそも上條は学部内では一番歳が若いのだからしかたがない。
「なんで俺みたいなのにそんな話が来るんですか。教授だって独身じゃないですか」
「俺はほら、でっかいバツが一個ついてっから」
学部長の娘さんと結婚したものの上手くいかずに別れた宮城には流石の学部長も見合いは持って来づらいのだろうか。
「そういうもんですか」
「そういうもんだ」
自分に火の粉が飛んでこないのをいいことに宮城はどこか楽しそうだ。
「もし来たとしても断っておいて下さいね」
「上條にはちゃあんとラッブラブな恋人がいまーす、ってか?」
「教授……」
「冗談だって」
宮城の笑い声と煙草の煙を手で払いながら弘樹は自分の机についた。
